The Uganda Bureau of Statistics(UBOS) Executive Director and Chief Statistician of Uganda, Dr. Chris N. Mukiza who was on Monday among the senior government officials who received President Museveni as he kicked off his campaign rallies in the Kigezi Sub-region  gave key indicators for the district.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Mukiza shared a summary of demographic and socio-economic findings for Kisoro District, extracted from the National Population and Housing Census 2024 final report.

He revealed that the district is home to 433,662 people and of these, 85,092 residents aged 10 years and above own mobile phones, while 8,840 in the same age group use the internet — a reflection of rising digital connectivity in the district.

On household conditions, Dr. Mukiza reported positive trends in health and welfare. At least 73,427 households own one or more mosquito nets, indicating improving malaria prevention coverage. Access to essential services is also advancing, with 62,142 households using improved water sources and 27,513 households accessing improved sanitation facilities.

He said energy access continues to expand as well, as the district now has 27,264 households connected to the national electricity grid, while 18,357 households rely on solar energy for lighting — signaling increased uptake of renewable energy solutions.

Despite these encouraging indicators, Dr. Mukiza stressed the urgent need for significant investment in Kisoro’s road infrastructure. Enhanced road access, he said, is critical for unlocking the district’s full economic potential.

He noted that Kisoro is richly endowed with world-renowned tourism assets — including mountain gorillas, crater lakes, and distinct natural landscapes. With improved transport networks, these attractions could draw more visitors, boost tourism revenue, and support both local and national development.

Dr. Mukiza emphasized  that the district’s progress across health, digital access, and energy sectors should be matched with stronger infrastructure upgrades to sustain long-term growth.
