There was jubilation and excitement as Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Bushenyi emerged winners of the African Debate Championship held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The continental competition ran from November 21–24 at Sparks Academy International School in the Rwandan capital. The grand finale, held on Sunday, November 23, 2025, saw Parental Care Bushenyi defeat Munro Primary School from South Africa to claim the 2025 Pan African Debate Championship title.
Speaking after the victory, the school’s Director, Trevor Yebazamukama, said Parental Care has intentionally nurtured a strong debate culture among its learners—an investment he believes is shaping their future.
“We have built a culture of debate among our pupils, and competing at this level sharpens their skills and strengthens their confidence. These disciplines will help them earn a living through public speaking,” Yebazamukama noted.
The school’s headteacher, Desmond Tayebwa, praised both learners and teachers for their dedication, attributing the win to teamwork, consistency, and hard work.
“We are champions, and we plan to take ten pupils who will be grouped into three teams. We believe they will continue achieving the best,” Tayebwa said. He added that the competition tested the school’s ability to perform at both national and international levels, strengthening their ambition to excel on the global stage.
This year’s championship featured debate, public speaking, and storytelling categories, attracting 98 schools from across Africa, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, and Malawi, among others.
Following their victory, Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Bushenyi will represent Africa at the World Debate Championship scheduled to take place in Canada late next year. It is worth noting that the school also emerged champions in the 2023 edition held in Nairobi, Kenya.
