The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) has completed a five-day Cyber Security and Cyber Terrorism Awareness Workshop in Kampala, aimed at building regional capacity to prevent, detect and respond to growing cyber threats.
Chief of Staff – Air Force, Brigadier General David Gonyi, who represented the UPDF Chief of Joint Staff, commended the EASF for spearheading what he described as an impactful and timely programme.
He said the rapid evolution of technology had expanded the definition of national security, noting that Ugandans today conduct payments, purchases and essential services online—making cybersecurity a core element of national resilience.
“Cyber criminals operate across borders. Your readiness and discipline in training will determine how well Uganda confronts emerging threats,” Gonyi told participants, adding that national defence now includes the protection of economic systems, digital infrastructure and political processes.
Major N. Faustin, who led the EASF organising team, said the workshop had fostered closer coordination between policymakers and technical experts.
He praised the participants’ commitment, describing their engagement as productive and inspiring.
Speaking on behalf of participants, Captain H. Muhwezi said the training had been transformational and urged colleagues to share the knowledge gained with their peers and communities.
The workshop brought together youth groups, police officers, law enforcement personnel and a wide range of security stakeholders, creating space for collaboration on cybersecurity challenges affecting the region.
EASF officials said the organisation remains committed to promoting cyber awareness and building practical capacities across member states to counter rapidly evolving digital threats.
