I encourage you to rely on your team, maintain high morale and stay adaptable. The mission depends on leaders who can guide troops through complex operational environments

The African Union has honoured troops of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under Battle Group XLI for their distinguished contribution to peace and stability in Somalia.

The soldiers, deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), were on Thursday decorated with medals and awarded certificates for their outstanding service during their tour of duty.

At the same ceremony, the outgoing contingent officially handed over responsibilities to Battle Group XLV.

Speaking on behalf of the Force Commander, Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, the Sector One Commander, Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, commended the troops for their resilience in both offensive and defensive operations that weakened Al-Shabaab activities in the Barawe and Baledamin sub-sectors.

“The troops have shown exceptional commitment and professionalism. Their efforts have severely restricted Al-Shabaab’s freedom of movement and strengthened security across the sub-sectors,” Brig Gen Ssemwanga said.

He highlighted Battle Group XLI’s key achievements, including securing Barawe Airport, mentoring Somali National Army (SNA) forces, and conducting key leader engagements that have contributed to a period of relative calm.

Brig Gen Ssemwanga also expressed confidence in the incoming contingent commander, Col Justus Musenene of Battle Group XLV.

“I encourage you to rely on your team, maintain high morale and stay adaptable. The mission depends on leaders who can guide troops through complex operational environments,” he advised.

Outgoing commander Col Michael Hyeroba thanked the UPDF leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility to lead Battle Group XLI.

“I am grateful for the confidence placed in me. The successes we celebrate today were made possible by teamwork and the guidance of our commanders,” Col Hyeroba said.

Incoming commander Col Musenene pledged to build on the progress made by his predecessors.

“Our pre-mission training has equipped us well. My team is ready to take on the new responsibilities and continue advancing the mission’s objectives,” he said.

The decorated soldiers represented the wider Battle Group, whose colleagues had been honoured earlier for their service and sacrifice in promoting stability in Somalia.

The event was attended by senior AUSSOM and UPDF leaders, including incoming contingent commander Brig Gen Jackson Kayanja, Sector One Deputy Commander Col Francis Aragamoi, Contingent Administration Officer Col John Mark Ssemanda, Battle Group XLII Commander Col Sam Kosia Kuteesa, asset commanders, department heads, senior and junior officers, and militants under Sector One.
