The Prime Minister of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, Andrew Byakutaga, has called on residents of Hoima City to take personal responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in their homes and workplaces, particularly those operating in Hoima Central Market, in order to prevent the spread of diseases.
He made the appeal during the launch of the National Cleaning Days in Hoima City.
Byakutaga stressed that a clean environment is essential in reducing the risk of communicable diseases such as cholera and dysentery, noting that cleanliness should begin at home.
“We need to ensure that we maintain a clean environment at home and where we work, especially here in Hoima Central Market because you deal in foodstuffs,” he said.
Hoima City Principal Health Officer, Felix Mugano, urged residents to work closely with city authorities to improve sanitation.
“People often blame us for a dirty city, but we cannot do it alone as leaders. We need the support of all stakeholders, including residents. When we join hands, stop littering, and make use of dustbins, our city will look smart,” he said.
Hoima City Mayor, Brian Kaboyo, attributed the city’s sanitation challenges to residents’ indiscriminate disposal of garbage and called on business operators to adopt proper waste management practices.
Kaboyo said the cleaning campaign will take place every week, targeting different parts of the city as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a clean environment—particularly in the city centre—as Hoima positions itself to become a model city amid growing oil and gas prospects in the region.
