The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), through its Corporate Communications Unit, has convened senior news editors from leading media houses across the country under the umbrella of the Editors’ Guild, aiming to strengthen collaboration between the media and NEMA in promoting accurate and responsible environmental reporting.
In his opening remarks, the Executive Director of NEMA, Barirega Akankwasah, expressed appreciation to the editors for their critical role in holding the authority accountable through balanced media coverage. He urged journalists to prioritize responsible reporting over sensationalism, noting that accurate information is key to fostering public awareness and sustainable environmental practices.
“Environmental stewardship is not the responsibility of NEMA alone; it is a collective duty that requires the active engagement of all Ugandans, including the media,” Barirega said.
During the session, the Executive Director highlighted Uganda’s remarkable achievements in the environment sector. He noted that Uganda has been ranked first in Africa and fourth globally in wetlands conservation, reflecting the country’s commitment to protecting its critical ecosystems.
Additionally, he underscored that the National Environment Act, Cap. 181, was voted the best law globally under the World Future Policy Award, among other international recognitions for excellence in environmental governance.
Barirega encouraged media practitioners to leverage these achievements in their reporting, emphasizing the role of accurate and responsible journalism in shaping public perceptions and driving environmental action.
The engagement is part of NEMA’s ongoing efforts to foster closer partnerships with the media and strengthen public understanding of environmental issues, ensuring that Uganda’s natural resources are sustainably managed for current and future generations.
