Late this evening, November 11, three members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) who were among those arrested in Mbarara last week appeared before Grade One Magistrate Chambers Paul Kedi, who is currently the acting Chief Magistrate of Mubende.
The trio was identified as Ezra Kibirige, Hamza Matovu, and Tracy Nakimuli.
During their appearance before Magistrate Kedi, the suspects were charged with simple robbery, allegedly committed on October 7, 2025, during an NUP presidential campaign rally at Kyeguluuso Cell, Mubende Municipality.
The accused were remanded to Kaweeri Prison until December 15, 2025.
This development left several NUP members and leaders in Mubende puzzled and frustrated, saying the suspects are not residents of the district.
“First of all, the case they are being charged with was already handled by the party and the police. Officer Muhumuza, who claimed he was beaten and lost money during the presidential campaign in October, had arrested one Ssenyonga, a resident of Kikona," said Moses Ssemata Musasizi, the NUP Chairperson for Mubende Municipality.
"Eventually, Muhumuza was compensated with Shs3 million, and Ssenyonga was released,” he added.
“They are not residents of Mubende, so I’m confused why they are being brought here,” Musasizi added.
Musasizi also revealed that three other NUP members had been taken to Kakumiro District, noting that the party is uncertain about their legal status or whereabouts.
“They brought six to Mubende Police Station, and three of them were taken to Kakumiro. We are not sure whether they were also taken to court,” Musasizi narrated.
He told The Nile Post that NUP leaders are planning to visit the detained members to assess their situation and explore ways to secure their release.
“We have agreed to go to Kaweeri Prison tomorrow to visit them and find out how we can help,” said Musasizi.
