A woman breaks down after seeing a truck carrying the detainees leave Mbarara Central Police Station
Two police trucks carrying the detainees left Mbarara Central Police Station at around 5pm on Monday, but authorities have not issued any public statement regarding their destination or the reasons for the prolonged detention.

Police in Mbarara have transferred several National Unity Platform (NUP) members to an undisclosed location, leaving relatives stranded and anxious.

The arrests, which took place on Friday as the suspects were en route to a NUP campaign rally in Bwizibwera, have sparked concern over alleged violations of legal procedures, including the 48-hour rule requiring suspects to be produced in court.

Lawyers representing the suspects condemned the action, describing it as a breach of legal rights.

“As the lawyers, we have also been denied access by the police, being played games here and there. But whatever they are doing is simply impunity which must stop,” said Kato Tumusiime.

Relatives expressed deep distress at being denied information about their loved ones. Sister Mercy, a resident of Mile 7 along Mbarara-Ibanda Road, said she was released because she had a baby, but her husband remains in custody.

“We haven't had peace; the baby cries every night wanting the father,” she said.

Benon Begumisa from Bugamba Rwampara added, “My son Hassan Musasizi was arrested on Friday and we have not gained access to him. It’s painful that police, who should protect the law, are the ones breaking it.”

Several detainees were reportedly caught up in the arrests while attending a burial in Ibanda, and some were actually known NRM supporters.

Majidu Luganda, chairman of Katete Boda Boda Association, said, “We have about 27 colleagues that were arrested and we know them as NRM supporters and members, some are on committees of the party.

"Many of them were from a burial in Ibanda, carrying each other on their motorcycles and they landed into a NUP procession. We have asked to meet the suspects but we have been denied access.”

The police’s lack of communication has heightened fears and confusion among families, who continue to demand clarity on the whereabouts and treatment of those detained.

As of Monday evening, no official update had been issued by the police regarding the arrests or the transfer of the suspects.
