The Joe Walker Remembrance Relay 2025 returns this year with a renewed call to action: to remember those lost on Uganda’s roads and to advocate for safer transport for all.
The 60-kilometer relay will take place on November 15, 2025, beginning and ending at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, in a powerful display of unity, empathy, and shared responsibility.
Held in commemoration of UN Global Road Safety Week, the event seeks to turn tragedy into purpose. Every day, Uganda loses an average of 14 people to road crashes, with many others left injured or permanently disabled.
Behind each statistic lies a story of parents, children, and friends whose journeys ended too soon. The Joe Walker initiative aims to transform this grief into a nationwide movement for change, mobilising citizens, institutions, and corporate partners to “walk for those who no longer can.”
This year’s relay invites corporate organisations, schools, and community groups to form teams that will carry the message of road safety across designated stages of the 60-kilometer route.
Teams can consist of six members walking 10 kilometers each, or three members covering 20 kilometers each, symbolically passing a baton at each stage to represent collective effort in achieving safer roads.
Participation in the event is free of charge, but teams are encouraged to make a voluntary contribution of Shs 20,000. Proceeds will go toward purchasing essential supplies and care materials for road crash victims at Mulago Hospital.
The relay’s format underscores the theme of shared responsibility, aligning with the UN’s call for “Advancing Sustainable Transport for All.”
By walking together, passing the baton, and supporting one another along the route, participants send a strong message that reducing road crashes requires unity, awareness, and community-driven action.
Now in its latest edition, the Joe Walker Remembrance Relay builds on past success in turning walking into a form of advocacy.
The initiative uses each step as a reminder of those lost, and as a step forward toward safer, more responsible road use.
This year’s event is held in partnership with the Nicole Foundation, ITMS/MoWT, Sheraton Hotel, Next Media, Fun Cycling, and the Orthopedic Society of Uganda.
