The Democratic Party (DP) has intensified efforts to consolidate its structures in Mityana District, unveiling candidates to contest parliamentary seats in the 2026 general elections.
The move reflects a renewed attempt by Uganda’s oldest opposition party to reclaim relevance in the region.
Among the new faces is 23-year-old Amos Lutaya, endorsed as DP’s flag bearer for Mityana South Constituency, currently represented by Richard Lumu, who left the party to run as an independent.
Speaking during his nomination, Lutaya said his candidacy aims to give young people a stronger voice in leadership and tackle pressing local challenges.
“For too long, young people have been left behind in decision-making,” he said. “It’s time for us to rise, participate actively in politics, and shape the future we want.”
He cited poor education, impassable roads, and limited healthcare access as key motivators for his entry into politics.
“Our schools are struggling, our roads are impassable, and access to quality health services is still a dream for many,” Lutaya said.
“My manifesto focuses on practical solutions to uplift people’s lives, especially the youth, women, and farmers.”
The Mityana South parliamentary race has attracted seven candidates, including Kintu Fred (Independent), Nalwoga Kevin (NUP), Lutaya Amos (DP), Kamya Henry Makimbi (NRM), Byarugaba Henry (Independent), Ssenabulya Steven (NPP), and Richard Lumu (Independent).
Political analysts note that DP’s re-emergence in the constituency, coupled with youthful candidates like Lutaya, could inject fresh competition into the 2026 elections.
Lutaya, who describes himself as a “Young Mandela,” believes his candidacy will restore hope among youth and revive DP’s influence in Mityana.
“The people of Mityana South deserve a new chapter of leadership, one that listens, acts, and delivers,” he said.
As campaigns approach, the Democratic Party is positioning itself as a bridge between experienced politicians and a new generation eager to redefine the district’s political future.
