Retired Brigadier General Emmanuel Rwashande has earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy with first-class honors from Nkumba University.
The achievement, announced during the university’s 27th graduation ceremony held Saturday at the main campus in Entebbe, comes as the decorated officer positions himself as a formidable contender to unseat Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
More than 2,000 students were conferred with degrees, diplomas, and certificates across various disciplines at the colourful event, which was attended by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, senior military officers, government officials, and entertainment personalities.
An elated Rwashande expressed gratitude after receiving his degree, saying the academic milestone had been a product of determination and discipline.
“Even at my age, the thirst for knowledge never fades. I read late into the night and never missed any class or coursework,” he said with a broad smile.
Joking about his commitment to studies, Rwashande added, “My experience has even caused my school to come and start giving lectures.”
Rwashande was previously at the center of an academic storm during the NRM party primaries when the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) was accused of certifying his military-related training as equivalent to a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
The controversy, which drew scrutiny from both political rivals and education watchdogs, questioned the legitimacy of his earlier qualifications.
However, his latest degree achievement from Nkumba University now appears to put those doubts to rest, reinforcing his credentials as he eyes higher political office.
Also among the day’s standout graduates was singer and Presidential Advisor on Kampala Affairs, Catherine Kusasira, who obtained the same degree in International Relations and Diplomacy.
Visibly emotional, Kusasira said: “This journey was tough — balancing music, public duties, and lectures. But God has been faithful. I pray He opens doors for me to teach and mentor the next generation using this knowledge.”
Often criticized for holding influential positions despite limited formal education, Kusasira said her graduation was proof that personal growth and education are achievable at any stage in life.
“Let this be a message: it’s never too late to learn. Education transforms lives,” she declared.
Nkumba University Vice Chancellor Prof. Jude Lubega commended the graduates for their perseverance and urged them to apply their skills toward national transformation.
As confetti filled the air and families cheered, Brig Gen Rwashande and Catherine Kusasira stood out as symbols of lifelong learning — proving that determination, discipline, and purpose transcend age, rank, or background.
