You can’t be a presidential candidate and still focus on local government issues; you’re supposed to address bigger national matters

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) aspirant for Nakawa West Parliamentary seat, Burora Herbert Anderson, has taken a sharp swipe at opposition presidential candidates, calling into question their ability to address national issues as Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections.

Burora, who is challenging incumbent National Unity Platform (NUP) MP Joel Ssenyoni, made the remarks during NBS Barometer on Tuesday.

“You can’t be a presidential candidate and still focus on local government issues; you’re supposed to address bigger national matters,” Burora said, critiquing opposition leaders for what he described as a narrow focus.

The former Rubaga Division Deputy Resident City Commissioner further criticized opposition presidential hopefuls, claiming that they offer little innovation in their policy proposals.

“Those competing against President Museveni have nothing new; they’re simply referencing his manifesto, while Museveni is building on and complementing his own,” Burora said.

Burora’s comments come amid a tense political landscape in Nakawa West, where the NRM is determined to reclaim the parliamentary seat from the Leader of Opposition.

The Nakawa West constituency has increasingly drawn attention as a potential bellwether for party strength in Kampala.

The NRM aspirant emphasised that continuity under President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership provides stability and strategic development, and he urged voters to consider candidates who contribute to national progress rather than focusing solely on local politics.

Burora’s campaign has thus far centered on leveraging his alignment with the NRM and President Museveni’s development agenda to unseat Ssenyoni and reaffirm the party’s influence in Nakawa West.
