The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 5th Infantry Division has officially welcomed Colonel Gai Fraser Mpadwa as its new Deputy Division Commander, following a formal handover and takeover ceremony held at the Division Headquarters.

Mpadwa succeeds Colonel David Opeero, who has been transferred to the Mountain Division to continue serving in the same role. The event was presided over by the Division Commander, Major General Keith Katungi, and attended by brigade and battalion commanders, staff officers, and regional political leaders.

In his address, Katungi commended Opeero for his dedicated service and professionalism, describing him as “a disciplined and dependable officer who has been instrumental in driving the Division’s operational success.” He further urged both officers to continue serving the UPDF with integrity and commitment.

“Opeero has demonstrated exemplary leadership and teamwork. I am confident that Col Mpadwa will build on that foundation and continue steering the Division toward excellence,” he said.

In his farewell remarks, Opeero expressed appreciation to the Division’s leadership and staff for their cooperation and teamwork during his tenure.

“It has been an honour to serve alongside men and women dedicated to protecting our country,” said Opeero.

“The spirit of unity and professionalism within this Division has made our mission both achievable and rewarding.”

Taking up his new role, Mpadwa thanked Katungi for the opportunity to serve and pledged to uphold the Division’s standards of discipline, readiness, and operational efficiency.

“I am deeply grateful for this trust and responsibility,” said Mpadwa.

“I will continue the work of my predecessor and ensure that the 5th Division remains steadfast in fulfilling its mandate to defend and serve the people of Uganda.”

The ceremony underscored the UPDF’s commitment to maintaining professionalism, continuity in leadership, and operational effectiveness as part of its broader mission to safeguard Uganda’s sovereignty and promote peace and stability.
