This accolade is a testament to the power of collective action and community resilience

Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) Secretary General Robert Kwesiga has been honoured with a national award by President Yoweri Museveni in recognition of his outstanding humanitarian service and leadership.

The award was presented on Independence Day, October 9, 2025, during celebrations held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds as Uganda marked its 63rd Independence Anniversary.

According to a statement from URCS, the award recognises Mr. Kwesiga’s exemplary leadership in emergency response, his efforts to protect vulnerable communities, and his role in transforming the Red Cross into a key partner in national development and disaster management.

URCS noted that when Mr. Kwesiga assumed office in 2013, the institution was facing a financial and organisational crisis, with debts exceeding USD 10 million. Under his leadership, the Red Cross cleared its debts, restored public and donor confidence, and more than doubled its funding portfolio, attracting new programs and partners.

Speaking after receiving the award, Mr. Kwesiga said he was “deeply humbled” by the recognition, dedicating it to the staff and volunteers of the Uganda Red Cross.

“This accolade is a testament to the power of collective action and community resilience,” he said. “As we celebrate Uganda’s independence, let us also commit to building a nation guided by compassion, dignity, and unity.”

URCS reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Government of Uganda, United Nations agencies, the private sector, and other partners to strengthen humanitarian response and community resilience across the country.
