Leaders in Mubende Municipality, led by NRM chairperson and East Division mayoral flag bearer Joseph Lubega, popularly known as Jozanah, visited Jane Katushabe, a mother who has been bedridden for seven months after an accident on her way to antenatal care left both her legs broken.
Abandoned by her husband, Enock Imaanairikumwenamatwe, Katushabe has been fending for herself and their five children.
On September 18, she gave birth to a baby girl in her single-room home, assisted by a neighbor who ensured a safe delivery.
Jozanah said he was moved by her story, which he first saw on Nile Post and NBS TV. “When I read your story on Nile Post and watched it on NBS TV, I felt touched and decided to buy these basic items for the baby,” he said.
He appealed to the public and fellow well-wishers to support Katushabe, urging that she receive proper medical care.
“She is in a state of confusion, and I want to appeal to all good-hearted people to help this lady by taking her to a hospital to treat her broken legs. She cannot move, and yet she has just given birth,” he added.
Jozanah expressed gratitude that the mother and child were safe. “I feel happy for the mother because, when you look at her, you can hardly believe she has just given birth. I thank God for her life,” he said.
Other local leaders also joined in providing support. Vincent Tumusiime Gahanga Kissanja, aspirant for Mubende District Chairperson and District Councillor for Kassambya Town Council, called upon officials from Mubende Regional Referral Hospital to intervene.
“I am here to help this lady with the little I have, but I also call upon the director of Mubende Regional Referral Hospital to visit her and provide support,” Kissanja said.
He pledged to lead a fundraising campaign across Mubende District to help Katushabe access medical treatment.
“I am going to spearhead the fundraising because her situation is alarming, and we call upon everyone to come forward and support her,” he added.
Joan Komugisha, aspirant for Mubende Municipality MP, also visited Katushabe, bringing assistance and expressing her concern. Visibly moved to tears, Komugisha urged the public to contribute.
“It is really touching when you look at this lady and the condition she is living in. I want to join good-hearted people by giving the little I have,” she said.
