The Federation of Uganda Social Entrepreneurs (FUSE) has ignited a fresh wave of enthusiasm for social entrepreneurship among university students following a transformative public lecture held at Makerere University on Friday, August 29, 2025.
Hosted at the Food Science Conference Hall under the theme “Fostering Social Entrepreneurship Among University Students,” the event brought together students, academics, professionals, and development stakeholders for an engaging dialogue on how young people can drive meaningful change through enterprise.
Delivering the keynote address, Timothy Mugerwa, FUSE president and CEO, urged students to rethink their career aspirations.
“Obtaining a degree holds value; however, embracing social entrepreneurship will offer you a path to create innovative solutions and shape your own future,” Mugerwa said.
His message resonated deeply with the audience, sparking a new enthusiasm for careers that combine profit with purpose.
The lecture featured a panel discussion with some of Uganda’s most inspiring social entrepreneurs, including Dimma Muhammed Mawejje, founder of Mawejje Creations, and Lilian Nakigozi, founder of Women Smiles Uganda.
Mawejje shared his journey: “It wasn’t just about creating a business; it was about seeing a problem and feeling a deep conviction that something needed to be done.”
Nakigozi highlighted the abundant opportunities available to young innovators.
“There are many organizations and programs that support social entrepreneurship ventures. Use your phones efficiently, explore these opportunities, and seek support to start or scale your own ventures,” she advised.
Their candid insights on motivation, challenges, and opportunities inspired students to think boldly about addressing local issues with innovative solutions.
Mugerwa emphasized FUSE’s role as a bridge-builder for young entrepreneurs.
“FUSE is here to connect you with mentors and provide the resources you need to succeed,” he assured the participants.
Beyond inspiring stories, the event underscored the crucial role social enterprises play in tackling Uganda’s pressing challenges — from poverty to environmental sustainability.
Organizers described the lecture as the start of a broader movement empowering young people to shape Uganda’s socio-economic future.
The event concluded with a call to action, encouraging students to join the FUSE network and bring their ideas to life.
With FUSE’s support, Uganda’s youth are now better positioned to lead a new era of entrepreneurship that blends business acumen with social impact.
