Erias Lukwago asks MPs to weed out "impunity" at BoU

The Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago has implored the Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (Cosase) to seriously dig up the malaise at the Central Bank.

Next week, the committee will start scrutinising the special audit on Bank of Uganda carried out by the Auditor General.

The audit raised questions about the way Bank of Uganda closed/sold some commercial banks pointing out that in many cases, there were no procedures to guide the central bank's decisions.

Among the people lined up to be questioned is Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile the governor and his deputy Dr Louis Kasekende.

While featuring on a radio talk show, Lukwago said: "The challenge for Katuntu is to assure Ugandans that this probe is not going to be an exercise in futility. Because of impunity Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile seems to be carving out the stature of a larger than life character. the other time when the IGG tried to probe into what they were doing, they said go and hang..."

The lord mayor said the red flag came up when Justine bagyenda, the former executive director BoU in charge of supervsion, was sacked and a lot of stories came up that lots of monies were stashed on her accounts.

"I am surprised no action was taken at that time, no forensic audit was taken. Honourable Katuntu you should help us this time to get to the bottom of the matter," Lukwago said.
