Uganda’s Deputy Head of Mission in Riyadh, Ambassador Sheik Sulaiman Guggwa Lubega, has launched a football match aimed at fostering unity among Ugandans living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia while advancing Uganda’s policy on cultural and economic diplomacy.
The launch took place on August 8, 2025, at Riyadh Football Pitch, bringing together Ugandan communities from Riyadh and Jeddah for a spirited competition.
The Riyadh team secured a narrow 3–2 victory, sparking celebrations among supporters.
In his keynote remarks, Ambassador Guggwa underscored the importance of solidarity and active engagement with the Ugandan Embassy.
“The embassy door is open, and you should not fear to come and meet our dedicated staff. When you specifically want to talk to me, please request, and they will bring you,” he said, adding that community activities such as football help relieve stress and strengthen social bonds abroad.
He also encouraged Ugandans who can legally bring their spouses to Riyadh to consider doing so, citing the emotional and psychological benefits of family support.
Reaffirming President Museveni’s call for Operation Wealth Creation, Ambassador Guggwa urged the diaspora to work hard, form Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs), and invest back home.
He assured them of the embassy’s commitment to supporting such initiatives and conveyed greetings from the Head of Mission, Ambassador Isaac Ssebulime.
The event was attended by key embassy officials, including Assistant Consulars Hamza Ssebagala and Ismail Kateera, and Hajji Kafumbe, head of the senior community leaders club in Riyadh.
According to the mission, the football initiative is the first in a series of cultural and community engagement programs designed to deepen diaspora ties, promote Uganda’s heritage, and strengthen international relations.
