In a strategic move to enhance communication and digital access in border communities, the Ministry of Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance through the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has donated 200 tablet devices to residents of Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council in Kasese District.

The digital tools were officially handed over during a ceremony held at Bwera Primary Teachers’ College, where community members, students, and local leaders gathered to receive the devices.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Minister of State for National Guidance, Godfrey Baluku Kabbyanga, who lobbied for the tablets as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide in rural and border areas.

“These tablets are more than just devices they are tools of empowerment,” Kabbyanga noted during the handover.

“I urge all beneficiaries to use them responsibly to access government information, improve communication, and contribute to the development of their communities.”

He emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring digital inclusion across Uganda, especially in marginalized areas such as border regions where connectivity and access to information remain limited.

"Technology must work for all Ugandans. That’s why we’re focusing on digital equity, especially in areas that have been historically underserved.”Kabbyanga noted.

Representing the Uganda Communications Commission, Mr. Jude Mulindwa echoed the minister’s remarks, noting that the tablets were intended to improve citizen engagement in government programs and foster accountability.

“Through ICT, communities can monitor service delivery, participate in governance, and access vital information in real time,” Mulindwa said. “This initiative reflects our broader goal of narrowing Uganda’s digital gap.”

The donation was particularly well received by young people and school leaders.

Swizin Mbusa, Head Prefect at Bwera Secondary School, said the tablets would make a huge difference in accessing online educational content and connecting with the wider world noting that the initiative as “a game changer” for youth empowerment and education.

Local youth leaders also praised the project. Sadadi Baluku, Chairperson of the NRM Youth League in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council, said the devices would boost access to timely information and improve community awareness.

“This support will help us stay informed and make better decisions for our future. It shows that the government recognizes the potential of young people in national development,” Baluku noted.

The ICT donation forms part of a broader government effort to promote digital transformation under Uganda’s Digital Vision 2040, which seeks to enhance e-governance, education, and rural connectivity.
