Kulthum Muzaata Regrets Publicising Marriage

Dr Kulthum Muzaata has expressed regret over publicly sharing details of her recent marriage and divorce on social media, revealing that she would have kept the union private had she anticipated the widespread public scrutiny and fallout.

In a candid interview on Sanyuka TV’s popular program Uncut, Kulthum confirmed she is now single and personally authored the widely circulated divorce letter that marked the end of her marriage to businessman Acram Gumisiriza.

“Yes, I wrote the letter,” she affirmed, adding that she is now fully committed to advancing her academic career and leaving her personal life behind the public eye.

Kulthum is preparing to present a paper on curriculum review at an upcoming international conference organized by Professor Maurice Amutabi at Multimedia University, underscoring her dedication to education and scholarly work.

In a recent Facebook post, she highlighted her latest academic achievements with pride:

“Just recently, I had two publications — one in the Journal of African Interdisciplinary Studies and another in the Journal of Popular Education in Africa. The articles focus on Curriculum Review and the Internationalization of Higher Education.”

Addressing the public’s fixation on her personal life, she urged:

“I want you to read my academic work with the same speed you read the divorce letter, because this is the kind of knowledge you need to improve your lives.”

Kulthum’s announcement comes after a turbulent period marked by her highly publicized marriage and subsequent separation from Gumisiriza, which drew considerable attention due to her late husband’s legacy.

Background

Hajjat Kulthum Nabunya Muzaata, widow of the late influential Muslim leader Sheikh Nooh Muzaata, confirmed the end of her marriage to Gumisiriza earlier this year.

Sheikh Muzaata passed away on December 4, 2020, leaving a deep void in Uganda’s Muslim community and in Kulthum’s life.

In a heartfelt letter released publicly, Kulthum detailed how she and Gumisiriza had grown emotionally distant over months, possibly years.

She described their relationship as one they were holding together out of “habit, history, or fear” rather than love.

“I want this process to be as respectful and cooperative as possible,” Kulthum wrote, stressing the mutual nature of the decision and the spiritual reflection that guided her to end the marriage.

She entrusted trusted family members and religious leaders to oversee the divorce proceedings, emphasizing her desire to part ways with grace and dignity.

Her announcement has sparked widespread social media conversations, with many supporters praising her courage and transparency as she navigates grief, motherhood, academia, and now, this new chapter.

As Dr Kulthum steps away from the glare of public relationships, she is determined to make a meaningful impact in education and curriculum development through her scholarly work—offering a powerful reminder that personal challenges can be a catalyst for renewed focus and contribution.
