The Uganda Police Force has raised alarm over the growing number of mob attacks and acts of violence targeting police officers across the country.
Although the general security situation remains calm, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke expressed serious concern over rising lawlessness, particularly interference with officers during arrests and operations. He pointed to two violent incidents that occurred on June 20.
Rusoke also confirmed that a potential terrorist attack was recently foiled through a joint security operation, underscoring the importance of coordinated efforts among security agencies.
He praised the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and other security units for their swift and effective response, which he said helped avert a major security threat.
“Our security teams acted with urgency and precision to neutralize the threat. Their action helped preserve public safety and maintain national security,” Rusoke said.
In one of the incidents in Mayuge District, police officers attempting to apprehend a robbery suspect were attacked by the suspect and his brother. Both an officer and the suspect sustained injuries during the scuffle.
On the same day in Swam Sub-county, Bukwo District, police rescued a suspect from an angry mob attempting to lynch him. The confrontation escalated, resulting in the suspect being shot in the leg and a police officer accidentally shot in the ankle. Initial investigations suggest the violence was incited by a local council chairperson.
“These acts of defiance are not only dangerous but criminal,” Rusoke stated. “Police officers are mandated to protect all citizens, including suspects, and must be allowed to do their work without obstruction.”
He condemned mob justice and attacks on law enforcement, warning that such actions undermine public order and would be dealt with under the law.
“Respecting the boundaries of law enforcement is not optional,” he added. “Taking the law into your own hands is unacceptable and punishable.”
In a separate development also on June 20, a firearm was discovered in Guru by a resident heading to his garden. Police say investigations into the discovery are underway.
The Uganda Police Force has called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and avoid vigilante actions.
