The Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development has cancelled 1,237 fraudulent land titles in a major clean-up of the land register for Blocks 190, 193, and 530 in Kyaggwe, Mukono Municipality.
The move follows the discovery of multiple overlapping land titles errors traced back to colonial-era planning, when town blocks were demarcated without regard to existing mailo land boundaries.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba said the overlapping titles had been exploited by fraudsters to defraud the public and financial institutions.
“Transactions on the affected blocks were halted to allow a thorough clean-up exercise,” Nabakooba said.
“We are now informing the public that the registers for these blocks have been cleaned and are open for transactions.”
The clean-up involved public notices and hearings to verify ownership claims.
The cancelled titles were deemed invalid after verification.
Mukono was selected as a pilot district for the exercise, which the Ministry says is part of broader efforts to establish a reliable and fraud-free national land register.
Nabakooba commended the public for their patience and urged continued cooperation as the Ministry rolls out similar clean-up operations in other urban areas.
“The Ministry is committed to ensuring land tenure security and a well-managed national land register,” she said.
