Jubilant scenes unfolded in Kitagwenda District on Tuesday as residents poured into the streets to give a heroic welcome to former District Chairperson, Robert Mugabe, following his successful nomination to contest in the upcoming National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries for the Kitagwenda County Member of Parliament seat.
Mugabe, popularly known as Omutembuzi (the pioneer leader of the district), returned to a warm reception in Kabujogera Town, where he was greeted by a large convoy of supporters, including boda boda riders donned in yellow reflectors emblazoned with his name.
The spirited welcome underscored Mugabe’s strong grassroots support, especially as he re-enters the political arena to challenge for a parliamentary seat.
Addressing residents during the homecoming rally in Kabujogera Town Council, Mugabe expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support and pledged a people-driven campaign.
“I am humbled by your love and support,” Mugabe told the cheering crowd. “My nomination is not just a personal milestone but a step forward for our community. I am ready to serve and bring the voice of Kitagwenda to Parliament.”He added.
Mugabe joins a growing list of contenders for the NRM flag, including the incumbent MP Joseph Nulu Byamukama, Agaba Abbas Mugisa, David Bambeiha Kamukama, and Emmanuel Arinaitwe.
With five candidates in the race, the NRM primaries are expected to be hotly contested.
Local observers say Mugabe’s return is already reshaping the political landscape in Kitagwenda. His track record as the founding district chairperson continues to resonate with many residents, who credit him with laying the foundation for the district’s development.
“We believe in Mugabe because he started this district with vision and determination,” said Jane Mbabazi, a resident of Kabujogera. “We are ready to walk with him again.”
As the campaign season gains momentum, Kitagwenda is bracing for a vibrant and competitive political season, with Mugabe’s comeback setting the tone for what could be one of the most closely watched races in the region.
