The High Court Criminal Division in Kampala has set June 25, 2025, for the hearing of a case in which ailing human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza is seeking the release of his passport from court custody.
Kiiza, who was granted bail on April 4, 2025, by Justice Micheal Elubu, had his passport retained as part of his bail conditions after spending 86 days in detention under a military tribunal.
But the human rights lawyer has told the Nile Post that he is unwell and needs to seek medical review abroad.
The conditions allowed him to apply for the passport's release should the need to travel arise.
According to court filings, Kiiza first made informal requests on April 24 and May 7, 2025, to retrieve his passport for overseas medical treatment as recommended by his physician.
On June 12, the Deputy Registrar of the High Court advised him to make a formal application, leading to the upcoming hearing.
In his application, Kiiza emphasizes that retrieving the passport is necessary for him to exercise his fundamental rights, including freedom of movement, access to healthcare, personal liberty, and the right to life.

His request is backed by an affidavit detailing his medical condition and the urgency of the situation.
The outcome of the June 25 hearing is expected to be closely watched by legal and human rights communities, as concerns grow over Kiiza's health and access to justice.
Protesters have been demanding the court expedites the matter to enable the lawyer travel for medical attention.
