Minnesota is reeling after two Democratic state lawmakers and their spouses were shot in their homes early Saturday.
Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband died in Champlin, while State Senator John Hoffman and his wife survived multiple gunshot wounds in Brooklyn Park.
Governor Tim Walz described the attacks as “politically motivated assassination attempts,” expressing deep sorrow for the victims.
“This appears to be a politically motivated assassination,” Walz said. “Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, and we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”
Police Chief Mark Bruley provided details on the suspect’s actions.
“When officers arrived at the Hortman residence, they found a vehicle resembling a police SUV with emergency lights activated. The individual inside was wearing a police vest, badge, and even carried a taser,” Bruley said.
“This person immediately opened fire on the officers when confronted. We exchanged gunfire, but the suspect managed to escape on foot.”
He added, “There is no doubt that if you saw this individual in uniform, you would assume they were a police officer. We have recovered the suspect’s vehicle and are conducting an extensive manhunt involving hundreds of officers and SWAT teams.”
The suspect is believed to have impersonated a police officer to gain access to the homes. Residents in Brooklyn Park are under a shelter-in-place order as authorities continue their search.
“We ask the public not to open their doors unless approached by two uniformed officers,” Chief Bruley warned.
Minnesota Superintendent Drew Evans confirmed that police received an initial call about the shooting at Senator Hoffman’s home at around 2am.
Another call was made at 3:35am when officers checked on Representative Hortman’s residence.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said, “The FBI is on the ground investigating this case alongside state and local partners. This horrific violence will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
President Donald Trump also issued a statement, saying, “I have been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against state lawmakers. Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America.”
Bob Jacobson, Minnesota’s commissioner of public safety, described the incident as “a dark day” for the state.
“Public servants have been targeted in a violent and cowardly way,” he said.
“The suspect exploited the trust that our uniforms are meant to represent. This is deeply disturbing to all who wear the badge.”
Jacobson noted that security has been increased for elected officials and others who may be at risk. “We will not allow fear or violence to define who we are or how we move forward,” he said.
As the investigation continues, residents remain on edge, hoping for swift justice and the safe apprehension of the suspect.
