At least 204 bodies have been recovered after an Air India flight crashed shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad, western India.

The London-bound aircraft was carrying 242 people when it went down, striking a residential complex used by doctors.

Police say it remains unclear how many of the deceased were passengers and how many were on the ground at the time of the crash.

Air India confirmed that the flight included 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese citizens and one Canadian.

Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik tells news agency ANI there is one survivor, who is in seat 11A on the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flight.

He has been identified by Indian media as a British national, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who shared a photo of his boarding pass with reporters.

"Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly," he told the press.

The flight manifest shared earlier by authorities lists the passenger in seat 11A as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national.

Among those on the ground, a woman recounted how her son survived by jumping from a second-floor window of the medical hostel that was struck by the plane.

Tata Group, which owns Air India, has announced compensation of 1 crore rupees (around £86,000) for each victim's family.

The company will also cover the medical expenses of those injured and support the reconstruction of the BJ Medical hostel affected in the crash.

In a statement, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran said the group was "deeply anguished" by the tragedy and pledged full support to the families and affected communities.

Air India’s chief executive, Campbell Wilson, issued a video message expressing sorrow over the incident.

"This is a difficult day for all of us at Air India and our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, their families and loved ones," he said.

Authorities and emergency teams continue to investigate the scene and search for more victims as the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
