The National Unity Platform (NUP) has conducted its Delegates Conference aimed at electing new leaders to its National Executive Committee (NEC).
The meeting was held at the party headquarters located in Kamwokya, Kampala.
Information emerging from the conference indicates that Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the current party president, and David Lewis Lubongoya, the Secretary General, are running unopposed for their respective positions.
Several other members have shown interest in contesting for key roles within the party’s leadership structure. Muwada Nkunyingi, the Member of Parliament for Kyadondo East, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, and Habib Buwembo are contesting for the position of National Mobiliser.
Francis Zaake, the MP for Mityana Municipality, Frank Kabuye of Kassanda South, and Shamim Nambasa, the former Guild President of Makerere University, are competing for the role of Youth Leader.
The position of Party Spokesperson has attracted competition between Allan Ssewanyana, MP for Makindye West, and Joel Ssenyonyi, the current Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
Susan Mugabi Nakaziba, the Woman MP for Buvuma District, and Benjamin Katana are contesting for the position of Party Treasurer.
John Mary Ssebuufu, a member of the party’s Electoral Commission, confirmed that 22 individuals have been nominated and approved to vie for the various NEC positions, having satisfied the requirements set out by the commission.
However, he did not explain how the delegates participating in the conference were selected, and the party’s constitution remains under contention.
Meanwhile, the founders of the original party that gave rise to NUP—Ssimbwa Kagombe and Mzei Kibalama Nkonge—have strongly opposed the conference.
They claim that the gathering scheduled for June 11, 2025, to elect the party’s leadership is illegal. They assert that the matter is already before the courts of law for resolution.
