Florence Andiru Nebanda, the district Woman MP for Butaleja, has survived an assassination attempt just days after picking up nomination forms for the same post.
In an interview with Nile Post, Nebanda recounted the harrowing experience, describing how a gunman on a motorcycle chased her car while she was heading to a funeral service.
According to Nebanda, the incident occurred around 6pm in the Doho Rice scheme area.
A man dressed in a grey uniform, allegedly attached to a security company, rode a motorcycle with registration number she could only notice as UAC and chased the MP's car.
"From the driving mirror, I saw the man attempting to cock a gun from a distance," Nebanda said.
The legislator said she could not get the complete registration number of the motorcycle.
Nebanda told Nile Post that her driver quickly reversed the vehicle to Nampologoma trading centre, where a crowd of people gathered, scaring off the would-be assassin.
"The big number of people who saw me stop in Nampologoma trading centre got closer to my car, and the motorcycle rider increased his speed for his life," Nebanda explained.
The MP revealed that she has received numerous threats, with some of her opponents allegedly behind the plot.
"I have sustained numerous threats, with reliable information from my diehards that some of my opponents are behind the mess," Nebanda said.
She condemned the politics of malice and emphasized that she has refrained from it.
Nebanda confirmed that she filed a statement at the Central Police station in Butaleja, pending investigation.
However, the District Police Commander was unavailable for comment at the time of press.
This incident is particularly concerning given the MP's family history. Florence is the sister of the former Butaleja District Woman MP Cerinah Nebanda, who died mysteriously in 2012.
The MP's survival is a testament to her driver and the crowd that intervened.
As investigations continue, Nebanda's experience highlights the need for increased security measures to protect politicians and the importance of promoting peaceful politics.
