Kampala RCC Asks Schools to Protect Against Fires as New Terms Reopens

The Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Kampala, Jane Asiimwe Muhindo, has issued a strong warning to individuals threatening to torch schools as students prepare to return for the second term. Her message comes amid growing concerns over safety in educational institutions across the city.

Speaking at a high-level security meeting convened at City High School in Kololo, RCC Muhindo—who also heads security operations in the city—condemned the threats and declared zero tolerance for any acts of violence targeting schools.

“We will not allow criminals to disrupt the education of our children through cowardly acts of arson. Security forces are on high alert and ready to ensure a peaceful and safe reopening of all schools,” said RCC Muhindo.

The meeting was prompted by reports of threats to burn City High School, which have heightened anxiety among staff and students. Teachers at the school voiced concerns about growing pressure and insecurity. In response, RCC Muhindo called for unity among education stakeholders, urging head teachers and staff across Kampala to resolve internal conflicts and foster a safe learning environment.

She further noted that her office, in collaboration with relevant authorities, is actively investigating allegations of corruption and misconduct within schools. “We are addressing all concerns in a structured manner. Violence and sabotage are not acceptable means of protest,” she added.

Kampala Education Officer Prosper Rwamasaka also weighed in, expressing alarm over what he termed as increasing political interference in the education sector. He warned that such interference was contributing to unrest and inciting threats of violence.

“Teachers or staff members found to be fueling instability through political influence or other disruptive actions will face strict disciplinary action,” Rwamasaka cautioned.

Meanwhile, City High School Head Teacher Mary Gorreti Weraga appealed for enhanced security, stressing the need for increased protection during this volatile period. “Our students and teachers are anxious. We urge the government to deploy more security personnel to guarantee safety as we resume term two,” she said.

The authorities reiterated their commitment to safeguarding all learners and school staff as the new academic term commences. The public has also been encouraged to report any suspicious activities around school premises.
