The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has issued a sharp condemnation of recent actions by security operatives, specifically highlighting the "irregular" arrest and detention of Advocate Abed Nasser Mudiobole.
The legal body is calling for immediate adherence to constitutional principles and due process from all security agencies operating within the country.
In a statement released today, the ULS expressed profound concern over the circumstances surrounding the lawyer's apprehension.
"As the Uganda Law Society, we call upon all security agencies to act within the confines of the law while executing their duties," the society declared.
The ULS directly challenged the manner of the arrest, drawing parallels with recent sentiments on lawful conduct.
"We wish to remind the security forces, in line with the sentiments expressed by (justice minister) Norbert Mao during his recent address here. Advocate Mudiobole is neither a terrorist nor a murderer," the statement read, emphasizing the professional standing of the detained individual.
The legal professional body further detailed its alarm over the lack of transparency surrounding the incident.
"The circumstances surrounding his arrest and subsequent detention by unidentified security operatives raise serious concerns," the ULS asserted.
"Such actions leave many unanswered questions and suggest irregular practices that must be clarified to the public."
The ULS's message was unequivocal in its condemnation and demands for reform.
"We strongly condemn these actions and urge all security agencies to comply with the rule of law," the statement affirmed. It then laid out fundamental requirements for any detention.
"If someone is to be detained, it must be done in a lawful manner, in a recognized facility, and with notification given to their legal representatives and next of kin."
