The Ministry of Works and Transport has begun urgent repairs on the Kampala–Jinja Highway, prompting a traffic diversion for heavy trucks and buses to ease congestion and facilitate smooth work.
Starting May 20, remedial works focus on restoring the road surface at Kigombya in Mukono District, alongside patching potholes at Namawojjolo, Lugazi, Kawolo, Najjembe, Mabira, Nakibizzi, and Mbikko.
These sections have suffered deterioration due to heavy traffic and adverse weather.
"To speed up repairs and reduce disruption, all heavy trucks travelling to or from Kampala and Jinja are advised to use the alternative Mukono—Kyetume—Katosi/Nyenga—Njeru route during this period," said Allan Ssempebwa, communications officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport.
This diversion is aimed at easing the load on the highway and protecting the vulnerable stretches, especially the Mabira Forest section, which has been prone to damage in past diversions.
The Ministry’s in-house construction unit is leading the maintenance works, expected to be completed by the end of June 2025.
Authorities urge motorists to observe all traffic directions and cooperate fully while the repairs are ongoing.
The Ministry apologises for any inconvenience caused and calls on the public to bear with the temporary disruptions as efforts continue to improve road safety and connectivity on this vital national corridor.
