Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has today granted bail to 'Innocent Ssemanda', the man at the centre of Stolen Identity: Dr Know-Nothing, an investigative exposé by Henry Mugenyi of NBS Television that uncovered a disturbing case of impersonation in Uganda’s medical system.
Ssemanda, who has been on remand for allegedly posing as a qualified medical doctor, was granted bail on medical grounds.
The court heard that he suffers from moderate hypertension and requires specialized attention that could not be accessed while in custody.
In our earlier investigation, Stolen Identity, we revealed how Ssemanda, armed with forged academic documents, had assumed the identity of a real doctor and practiced in multiple facilities, putting countless patients at risk.
The expose raised critical questions about gaps in the vetting systems within Uganda's health and education institutions.
Appearing in court today, his lawyers presented medical records requesting leniency. The magistrate granted bail and ordered him to report to court every two weeks as investigations continue.
Public response to the story has been swift, with health professionals and regulators calling for stronger oversight and background verification mechanisms across the sector.
