Martha Karua Says Denied Entry into Tanzania, to be Deported

Kenyan lawyer and former Justice Minister Martha Karua has said she has been denied entry into Tanzania by authorities in the East African country.

“I have been denied entry into Tanzania and I and two colleagues are awaiting deportation at Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport Dar  es Salaam,” Karua said on X.

The former Kenyan Justice Minister said she arrived at the airport in Dar es Salaam at 9am , only for one of the immigration officers to refer her passport to the supervisor “who has kept me waiting for an hour as she consults her superiors.”

She was with other human rights defenders Gloria Kimani and Lynn Ngugi.

“The supervisor has now informed us that our entry too Tanzania has been denied no reasons given. I am concerned that as a citizen of  East Africa, my access within the East African Community appears to be inexplicably restricted ,” Karua said.

According to Karua, her connection with the other two human rights defenders is that the trio were guests to the East African Law Society .

It is separately reported that Karua was in Tanzania to follow up on the detention of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is facing treason charges.

The Tanzanian government is yet to break its silence on the matter.
