The Ministry of Works and Transport has launched a comprehensive inspection of all Y.Y Coaches buses at the Namanve Motor Vehicle Inspection Station.
The move comes in response to a series of road accidents involving the company’s buses along the Katosi—Kyetume—Nyenga/Njeru and Pakwach—Arua highways, prompting widespread public concern over the operator’s safety standards.
In a statement posted on X on May 16, 2025, the ministry announced that Y.Y Coaches’ operations had been suspended for 15 days, effective May 13, 2025, to allow for thorough investigations and a full compliance audit.
In a post on their X handle, the Ministry of works revealed that "A comprehensive inspection of all Y.Y Coaches buses is ongoing at the Namanve Motor Vehicle Inspection Station” the ministry stated.
According to reports, the government has ordered Y.Y Coaches to present all its buses for re-inspection and produce the drivers involved in the accidents for further action.
The inspections aim to assess the mechanical condition of the fleet, driver qualifications, and compliance with traffic regulations.
The decision to suspend Y.Y Coaches has been met with mixed reactions.
While some commuters and road safety advocates have welcomed the government’s swift action, others, particularly regular passengers, expressed concerns about the disruption to their travel plans.
Y.Y Coaches is a major operator on eastern part of Uganda key routes, and the suspension could strain transport options in affected regions.
As the inspections continue, the ministry has urged other transport operators to prioritize safety and adhere to regulations to avoid similar measures.
Y.Y Coaches will need to demonstrate full compliance with safety standards before resuming operations, a process that could reshape its practices moving forward.
For now, commuters along the affected routes are advised to seek alternative transport options as the government works to address the underlying issues plaguing one of Uganda’s prominent bus operators.
