The garbage, which includes plastic bottles, polythene bags, glass, and food remains, is often dumped in rivers, walkways, and bushes due to poor disposal habits.

Health officials are warning of serious risks to public health and calling for urgent intervention.

“It’s a timing bomb waiting to explode. Municipal authorities need to come up with an urgent plan to deal with the situation.” Dr James Lemukol, the Moroto District health officer, said.

Moroto Mayor Ismail Mohammed acknowledged the crisis, saying efforts are underway to clear the garbage and educate residents about proper waste disposal.

He also pointed out that an abandoned road project by Chinese contractors has worsened the situation.

The incomplete road, which runs through the heart of Moroto town, has caused flooding, making garbage flow more widespread.

Local authorities are now urging residents to take responsibility for their environment, as they work to restore cleanliness and prevent a potential health disaster.
