This renovation comes as Kabale Municipality prepares to host International Museum Day on Sunday, May 18, 2025 an event that will showcase the Kigezi sub-region’s rich cultural heritage.

The rehabilitation aims to preserve the museum’s historical significance and provide a platform for the community to learn about and appreciate their cultural roots.

Solomy Nabukalu Nasubunga, curator in charge of the regional museum, confirms that the rehabilitation works are ongoing, adding that a lot has already been accomplished. She adds that it is high time the people of Kabale came to appreciate their own culture.

Nasubunga further says that Kigezi has a rich culture, calling for the need for preservation.

“This year, International Museum Day is being celebrated in Kabale, and the museum is trying to ensure that it brings awareness to the people of Kigezi. They have a rich culture, and there is a need for them to preserve it,” Nasubunga highlighted.

Hillary Chance, the tourism officer for Kabale Municipality, notes that hosting the celebrations comes with economic benefits for the community. He adds that there is a need for awareness creation through different channels so that the regional museum can continue to attract tourism even after the celebration.

“We appreciate the Ministry of Tourism for allowing Kabale to host the International Museum Day celebrations—an opportunity that we cannot take for granted. These celebrations come as an economic opportunity for the people of Kabale,” Chance stated.
