The Kigezi sub-region witnessed a spirited display of togetherness as more than 81 participants gathered at Kabale Municipal Stadium for the inaugural Kigezi Unity Run, an event designed to foster regional peace, unity, and healthy living as elections approach.
Participants came from all six districts of the sub-region, signalling a shared commitment to building a cohesive and inclusive Kigezi.
Organisers hailed the event as both a physical and symbolic stride toward healing divisions and inspiring community-driven development.
Grace Akunda Bwesigye, the chief organiser of the run, said the event was especially timely given the political atmosphere.
“Kigezi Unity Run is in a sense of—we need to be united,” she said.
“The people we followed in earlier generations worked together and developed Kigezi. We need people who can champion this now, especially as we approach elections.”
Bwesigye said she is determined to lead by example in promoting peace and dialogue across ethnic and religious lines.
She also used the platform to spotlight athletic potential in the region, inviting celebrated runner Moses Kipsiro to motivate young people with his story and presence.
Kipsiro, who served as the chief runner, urged youth to embrace athletics and called on government and regional leaders to invest in sports as a tool for transformation.
“As the chief runner, I am here to inspire the youth and tell them about the goodness of athletics, especially here in Uganda,” he said.
He added that Kigezi is full of untapped talent that deserves recognition and support.
The event arrives at a time when the Kigezi region is navigating tensions fuelled by religious and sectarian differences.
By uniting through sport, the organisers hope to send a message that community spirit can overcome entrenched divisions.
“The run is not just about fitness. It is about reawakening the legacy of unity that built this region,” Bwesigye said.
“It is a step towards a brighter and more peaceful future.”
