Parliament will resume business on Tuesday next week following a three-week recess that allowed the ruling party’s legislators to participate in internal elections.
In a communiqué to the Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Leader of Government Business Robinah Nabbanja, Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua, and Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige notified members that plenary sittings will restart next week.
The Deputy Speaker had adjourned the House sine die on April 17, bringing sessions to a halt as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) prepared for its nationwide village-level Baraza elections.
Earlier this week, President Museveni suspended both Cabinet and parliamentary activity to allow NRM MPs—who form the majority in Parliament—to participate in the internal polls, which concluded successfully.
The resumption comes after an abrupt end to debate on a controversial proposal to try civilians in military courts.
The matter had stirred sharp divisions in the House, with human rights advocates and opposition lawmakers warning against what they described as a violation of constitutional guarantees.
Parliament is expected to revisit the issue when it reconvenes, alongside pending legislation and reports that stalled during the recess.
