The National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Kitagwenda District has successfully conducted a peaceful re-election of the Local Council One (LC1) chairperson for Mitwe Cell, Nyabihoko Parish in Buhanda Sub County.
This comes after the initial election exercise was marred by violence, leading to its suspension.
The election, which had initially been slated for Tuesday as per the NRM roadmap, was disrupted when chaos erupted at the polling station.
As a result, voters were forced to return home without casting their votes, prompting party officials to call off the process for safety reasons.
On Thursday, a re-election was conducted at Nyabugando Primary School under heightened security. Police were deployed at the venue to ensure law and order, allowing voters to participate in a calm and organized environment.
Kitagwenda District NRM Registrar Charles Bakamya explained that the suspension was necessary to avoid further disorder.
“We had to suspend the election because of the violence that broke out at the polling station. Today, we ensured maximum security, and the re-election was conducted peacefully,” he told the Nile Post.
Bakamya expressed disappointment in the actions of a few individuals who incited the earlier chaos. “It is unfortunate that some individuals chose to undermine the polling officials, which led to unnecessary tension. Such behavior must be condemned,” he emphasized.
He further called on all voters to respect election officials and maintain discipline during such democratic exercises. “We urge all community members to uphold peace and allow our electoral processes to proceed without interference,” Bakamya added.
The successful re-election marks a return to normalcy in Mitwe Cell, with local residents and leaders applauding the effort to ensure that the people’s voices are heard in a fair and peaceful manner.
The NRM leadership has reaffirmed its commitment to transparent and orderly grassroots elections across the district.
