Former Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa has criticised National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, for his recent attack on his former deputy for Buganda, Mathias Mpuuga.
The critisism follows Kyagulanyi's accusation that Mpuuga was responsible for the arrest of former Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya and Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana in 2021.
Appearing on Sanyuka Television, Munyagwa stated that it is unjust to accuse Mpuuga of such actions, as he does not believe the former Leader of the Opposition would engage in orchestrating arrest of fellow legislators.
Munyagwa further asserted that Kyagulanyi and the NUP are making a mistake by diverting their focus from challenging the ruling government to attacking Mpuuga.
"Embassies monitor what Bobi Wine says as he is the opposition leader. By suggesting to the U.S. embassy that the abductions and human rights violations in the country are not orchestrated by President Museveni but rather by Mpuuga, you are effectively exonerating Museveni," Munyagwa explained.
"Then, you turn around and label Museveni a murderer in Canada. This represents a fundamental contradiction and poses a serious risk in terms of logic and reasoning." the former legislator said.
Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana were arrested in 2021 and spent 524 days in prison on charges related to a series of machete murders that resulted in at least 26 deaths in the greater Masaka area in mid-2021.
They were granted bail of Shs20 million by the High Court in Masaka on February 13, 2023.
On Tuesday, at the NUP headquarters, Kyagulanyi suggested that Mpuuga and other leaders from Masaka were behind the arrests of Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana, allegations that the former LoP has since denied as false.
