The Government of Uganda is set to begin compensation for residents affected by the construction of the 68km Kihura–Bwizi–Rwamwanja–Kahunge road and the 38km Mpara–Bwizi road projects in Kamwenge District starting July 2025.

The announcement was made by the State Minister for Works, Musa Ecweru, during the official launch of the project held last Friday at Bwizi Seed Secondary School in Bwizi Sub-county, Kamwenge District.

Responding to residents’ concerns over compensation for their properties that will be affected by the road works, Minister Ecweru assured them that the process will begin in a phased manner and that the government is committed to ensuring fair compensation.

“The government has already allocated Shs10 billion to compensate the affected residents,” said Hon. Ecweru. “I want to assure you that compensation will start in July 2025, and it will be carried out in phases to ensure a smooth and transparent process.”

He further clarified that the compensation funds are separate from the contract sum for the road construction, emphasising that the money will be provided directly by the Government of Uganda.

“This compensation is not part of the contractor’s project cost—it is government-funded. We are committed to ensuring that all those whose property is affected by this development are duly compensated,” Ecweru added.

The road construction project is expected to boost transport, trade, and service delivery across Kamwenge District, with residents expressing optimism about improved accessibility and economic opportunities once completed.
