Former Minister of Ethics and Integrity and human rights activist Miria Matembe has rejected claims circulating on social media that she has changed her position on President Museveni's leadership.
Matembe condemned the allegations as "nonsensical rubbish" and accused the National Resistance Movement (NRM) of attempting to manipulate public opinion.
Matembe clarified that recent rumours on X formerly Twitter, suggesting that she now supports Museveni’s continued rule over Uganda, are baseless and untrue.
"These lies have been circulating on social media, claiming that I believe President Museveni should remain in power, but I want to set the record straight. This is absolute nonsense," she said.
Matembe expressed disbelief at the extent of the misinformation, adding that she initially dismissed the rumours as the work of "fools" online.
However, she acknowledged a new revelation that made her confront the situation more directly
“I now realize that the NRM has confirmed these lies. I believe they have done their research and are aware that people value what I say," she explained.
The former minister emphasised that the spread of these false claims, especially through an official NRM spokesperson, has led to a distortion of her stance.
“I’m here today, fellow Ugandans, to tell you that this tweet is nothing more than a corrupt lie designed to turn your minds in the wrong direction," Matembe asserted.
She reiterated her commitment to her integrity, urging her supporters to trust her word.
“Stick to what I say. I rarely speak, but when I do, my mouth is my weapon. I speak the truth, and I will not allow these lies to taint my reputation," she added.
