Bishop Serverus Jjumba of Masaka Diocese has condemned Catholic professionals who sabotage fellow believers at work, warning that their actions betray both their faith and their responsibility as leaders.
Delivering a blunt homily during Labour Day Mass marking the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, Bishop Jjumba accused Catholics in high positions of pulling down rather than lifting up colleagues who share their faith.
“It’s disheartening to see some Catholics fighting their fellow believers at workplaces. Instead of supporting and guiding them, they bring them down. This must stop,” he declared.
He reminded congregants that May 1 is not just a public holiday but a holy day on the Catholic calendar—a moment to reflect on the values of diligence, humility, and service embodied by St. Joseph.
The Bishop also tackled growing speculation about the next pope, urging Ugandans not to be swayed by online rumours surrounding Vatican affairs.
“Let us not be discouraged or confused by what we read online. Instead, let us pray that the Holy Spirit guides the Cardinals to make the right choice,” he said.
On domestic issues, Bishop Jjumba pressed Catholic farmers and livestock keepers to take the lead in addressing Uganda’s food insecurity, describing agriculture as both a national duty and a moral calling.
“Uganda’s future lies in your hands. Let’s work tirelessly to ensure there’s enough food for all,” he said.
At the same event, John Paul Kagombe Mugwanya, chairperson of the Association of Catholic Professionals (ASSOCAP), called on Catholic experts to rally behind the association as a platform for unity and service.
“ASSOCAP was formed to bring together Catholics excelling in various professions to support one another and build both the Church and the nation,” said Mugwanya.
“We welcome every Catholic professional to be part of this journey.”
The gathering closed with renewed pledges among Catholic professionals to serve with integrity, uplift one another, and carry their faith into every sphere of public life.
