The Papal Nuncio to Uganda, Archbishop Luigi Bianco, has led the nation in mourning the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, hailing the late Pontiff as a tireless champion of human rights and the marginalised.
Speaking from the Vatican Embassy in Mbuya, Kampala, Archbishop Bianco urged the faithful to pray for the College of Cardinals as they begin the process of electing a new Pope.
“This is a time of mourning and prayer for the Church. We ask all believers to join us in prayer so that the Cardinals may be guided by the Holy Spirit in choosing a worthy successor,” he said.
He also expressed concern that many world leaders had not adequately recognised Pope Francis’ lifelong commitment to justice.
“He was a leader who prioritised the needs and concerns of the people he served, particularly the poor and oppressed. It is regrettable that many have yet to fully appreciate the depth of his commitment to humanity,” Bianco noted.
Remembering Pope Francis’ 2015 visit to Uganda, the Papal Nuncio recalled the Pontiff’s unwavering affection for the people and his deliberate outreach to the vulnerable.
“He made it a point to visit the sick, the poor, and the marginalised — showing them the compassion and presence of the Church in their lives,” he said.
The retired Bishop of Kotido, Giuseppe Filippi, also paid tribute to the late Pope, describing him as an inclusive and courageous shepherd of the Church.
“He did not discriminate among people. His message was always one of unity, dignity, and respect for all, regardless of background,” Bishop Filippi said.
He called on global leaders to embrace the Pope’s philosophy of dialogue over conflict.
“Pope Francis consistently encouraged dialogue as the best path when disagreements arose, instead of resorting to war, which only brings suffering and death. The world must draw inspiration from his example,” Filippi added.
As the Catholic faithful in Uganda join the global Church in mourning, the Vatican Embassy has announced special prayers and Masses to honour the life, service, and leadership of Pope Francis.
