The Nnaabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda, has stepped up efforts to promote mental health awareness with a visit to Butabika National Referral Hospital, where she donated essential items to support patients receiving psychiatric care.
During her visit, the Nnaabagereka emphasised the need to stand with those affected by mental illness, as well as the health professionals committed to their treatment and rehabilitation.
“This visit is about listening, learning, and showing solidarity with the remarkable individuals who provide hope and healing to those navigating mental health challenges,” she said.
She applauded the hospital’s leadership and medical staff for their dedication, particularly amid a rise in mental health cases following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Mental health is a growing concern, not just in Uganda but globally, and it’s crucial that we continue to give it the attention and resources it deserves,” she added.

In recognition of her continued advocacy, Butabika Hospital presented the Nnaabagereka with a token of appreciation for her contribution to raising awareness and calling for improved mental health services.
The visit forms part of a broader initiative by the Nnaabagereka Development Foundation, which last year launched the inaugural Queen’s Ball — a fundraising gala supporting individuals living with mental health challenges.
The event raised both awareness and resources for mental health programmes countrywide.
Building on that momentum, the Queen’s Ball 2025 is scheduled for 2 May at Sunset Terrace, Munyonyo, promising another evening of philanthropy, reflection, and community support.
Through her advocacy, the Nnaabagereka continues to champion compassion and collective action in addressing Uganda’s mental health burden.
