The Uganda Police Force has suspended upcoming National Unity Platform (NUP) regional mobilization training meetings following what it described as repeated violations of public order and traffic regulations by the party's supporters.
In a letter dated April 16, 2025, addressed to NUP Secretary General David Lewis, the police cited the party’s failure to adhere to previously issued guidelines during political activities.
The suspension follows an incident on April 14, 2025, where NUP supporters allegedly blocked oncoming traffic at Iganga Town while returning from a party event in Mbale.
“Mobilisation must not endanger people's lives, including other innocent road users,” the letter reads in part. It accuses the party of deliberately disregarding police instructions issued in previous correspondences dated May 28 and July 12, 2024.
The affected mobilisation meetings were scheduled for April 17 at Ankole Resort in Bushenyi and April 24 at Palm Garden Restaurant and Guest House in Gulu.
Both events have been put on hold “until further notice,” according to the police.
The statement, signed by police spokesperson Simon Peter Okoshi on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, also copied in the Regional Police Commanders for Greater Bushenyi and Aswa West.
The police have not indicated when or under what conditions the meetings may be allowed to proceed.
