Mawokota North Member of Parliament, Hillary Kiyaga, popularly known as Dr Hilderman, has issued an apology following a viral video in which he criticised supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), commonly referred to as "foot soldiers."
In the widely shared clip, Hilderman described some NUP supporters as "reckless," accusing them of downplaying his contributions to the party.
He also took a swipe at certain party leaders, alleging they had publicly dismissed his efforts in advancing NUP's agenda.
The video sparked criticism from a section of NUP supporters, who felt betrayed by a legislator they helped elect to Parliament under the party's ticket.
Appearing on Sanyuka Television, Hilderman clarified that his remarks were made during a private meeting intended for internal discussion and expressed regret that the footage had been leaked to the public.
“I’d like to apologise. I was emotional and may have acted in a way that wasn’t ideal. That meeting was meant for my internal team,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that the content became public when it was meant to remain private.”
Despite the backlash, Hilderman stressed that his relationship with NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, remains intact.
“My relationship with Bobi is smooth. In fact, he was the first person to message me after the video surfaced. He encouraged me to always be persuasive in my communication,” Hilderman revealed.
He further noted that Bobi Wine continues to mentor and guide him.
“He gives me feedback on what to do and what not to repeat. He has mentors, and he is also mentoring others. I’m one of those he mentors,” he said.
