The Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Children is making significant strides in drafting two critical bills aimed at protecting children's rights: the Food and Nutrition Bill and the Witness Protection Bill.
These bills are designed to address pressing issues affecting Ugandan children, particularly in the areas of nutrition and protection from abuse.
The Food and Nutrition Bill seeks to tackle hunger and malnutrition in homes and schools, ensuring children receive proper nourishment for their growth and development.
According to Margaret Makhoha, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Forum on Children, "The bill provides a jail sentence or fine for any responsible person who fails to provide food to children." This move aims to hold accountable those responsible for children's well-being.
The Witness Protection Bill is designed to give witnesses confidence and protection when testifying against individuals who commit crimes against children.
Makoha emphasized the importance of this bill, stating, "We are pushing for the Witness Protection Bill to give witnesses confidence and protection while giving evidence against persons who commit crimes against children." This bill will help ensure that witnesses feel secure when speaking out against child abuse.
These developments were announced during a preparatory meeting for the 3rd National Children's Parliament, scheduled for June this year at Parliament.
The event aims to bring together children, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss critical issues affecting children and advocate for their rights.
The Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Children has a history of advocating for children's rights, having previously contributed to the passage of bills such as the Sexual Offences Bill and the Prevention and Prohibition of Human Sacrifice Bill.
