Political activist Frank Gashumba has declared that the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) is steadily winning over the Buganda region, positioning itself as a formidable force in the country’s political landscape.
While Gashumba was hosted on NBSBarometer, a political show, he stated that PLU has been embraced by the people of Buganda, suggesting that it is the only political entity capable of reclaiming the region’s loyalty.
“The Buganda region can only be won back through the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU). The people of the region have embraced us,” he stated.
Gashumba also pointed out what he sees as a major challenge for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Central Uganda, arguing that despite the government’s efforts, its achievements are not effectively communicated to the people.
“When a lie is told and no one counters it, it becomes the truth. NRM has done some good things in Central, but no one is talking about them,” he stated.
He warned that if the NRM hopes to make significant electoral gains in Buganda, particularly against the National Unity Platform (NUP), it must intensify its efforts.
“If NRM wants to get even half of NUP’s votes in Central, they need to work 48 hours a day,” Gashumba remarked.
Beyond voter engagement, Gashumba criticized NRM leaders for their perceived over-reliance on President Museveni, arguing that they fail to reinforce his message at the grassroots level.
“I have never seen leaders who leave all the work to their president like NRM leaders. When the president visits an area, you never see these NRM leaders returning to reaffirm his message to the people,” he said.
His comments come at a time when political competition in Buganda remains intense, with PLU and NUP commanding significant attention while NRM struggles to maintain its influence in the region. With shifting political dynamics, the battle for Buganda’s support is set to shape future elections.
