KAMPALA – Daniel Kalinaki, the General Manager of Editorial at Nation Media Group in Uganda, has taken Sanlam Insurance to task after a prolonged six-month battle to receive his insurance claims.

Despite numerous attempts, Kalinaki claims he has yet to receive the payment owed to him.

In a public outcry on social media, Kalinaki expressed his frustration, revealing that his repeated efforts to collect his claim had been met with resistance from the insurer.

“I have spent over six months chasing an insurance claim from the recalcitrant Sanlam Uganda. Even after being directed to pay by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), they continue to dodge, delay, dither and dilly-dally. Choose your insurer carefully,” Kalinaki posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The matter quickly escalated on social media, prompting the IRA to intervene. In its response, the regulatory body clarified that Sanlam Uganda had cited Kalinaki’s hesitation in releasing the salvage of his car, which prevented the application of the principle of subrogation.

However, the IRA assured Kalinaki that an agreement had been reached after multiple engagements.

Not satisfied with the regulator's response, Kalinaki fired back, accusing Sanlam of misleading the authorities.

"Don’t fall for their mendacity. They took the wreckage weeks ago and already transferred it into their name,” Kalinaki retorted.

Shortly after, Sanlam Insurance reached out to Kalinaki privately, but he was unimpressed by what he deemed their disingenuous approach.

“Dear Sanlam, I have seen your DM asking for my contacts. This is the disingenuousness and duplicity I referenced in my first post. You know how to reach me. Just do the right thing to me and the many other victims crawling out of the woodwork,” he replied.

Kalinaki’s public confrontation with the insurance company has highlighted the ongoing issue of delayed claims and the lack of accountability in the insurance sector.

His comments have drawn attention from other dissatisfied customers, some of whom have also expressed their frustration with Sanlam.

The claims Kalinaki was seeking were for a damaged vehicle, with the seasoned journalist and editor revealing that he was a "belt-and-suspenders man" who lives on the cautious side of life.

This is the reason he takes out insurances for his assets—protecting himself against the unexpected.

Contacted for a comment on the matter, Sanlam said they would get back to this website but by the time of publishing, they were yet to do so.
